Parachutes by Kelly Yang
4.0

This was a quick but also hard read. The first half flew by so easily, and I loved reading about Claire's transitions to being a parachute and the cultural differences of living in America. Dani's storyline with her debate team was also a highlight and impossible to not root for her to do well in terms of debating. However, I did find Dani to be not a great person. Sure, Claire made her mistakes when moving in, but a lot of them were misunderstandings and Dani making snap judgements. And then what she does to Claire mid to end of the book. Needless to say, she was my less favorite out of those who weren't created to rooted against. Now, the message of this book, the constructing of how schools cover up sexual assault, and how justice doesn't always come in terms of rape cases was very poignant and beautifully toned. The ending, while lacked a sense of finality, was the perfect way to end this book because it represents a lot of the ambiguous and unsatisfying end results for sexual assault cases. But there was a sprinkle of hope and understanding maybe one day, eventually, they'll be okay, and I think that was a powerful ending. I also commemorate the bravery and strength of Kelly Yang for taking her own personal experience and sharing it with us, while also finding peace in her own way.

Other than Dani, I did love all the characters who weren't obviously bad. I loved how three dimensional a lot of them were. I went into this book disliking a few characters and ended up loving them. And also, Zach is such a sweet, lovable himbo and the whole situation with him was mostly amusing. This is definitely a book I'll be recommending to others. Not only for the content and commentary, but because it's a genuinely good, well-written book with interesting characters and aspects (the Parachutes) that isn't talked about much.
