A lot of reviews of this book are love it or hate it, but I fell somewhere in the middle. Overall I really enjoyed it, I thought it was very action-packed, the world-building and magic system were unique and interesting without being overly convoluted, and there was a great level of intrigue maintained throughout. Some parts felt predictable and leaned pretty heavily on overused tropes (sassy FMC who can somehow take down multiple trained guards with her back alley training; shadow wielding, morally gray MMC who’s mean to her), but other parts had my jaw on the floor with really well done twists. Sometimes the characters were fun and witty and complex and other times it felt like their dialogue and characterization fell a little flat (especially in the beginning, where the main character is acclimating to the Fae realm, it feels like she’s almost a background character in every scene and not really asserting much of a personality). I felt like the romance could’ve used more of a buildup beyond “she hates him but thinks he’s hot” and there were a few convenient plot devices that solved their problems within a few lines of text. All of that being said, if you’re looking for your next potato chip romantasy read, this was a fantastically fun ride.
