Teen angst abounds threaded with some serious issues. Who are we when we aren't trying to be popular? Why is so hard to be yourself when you are a teenager?
Janie and Micah were neighbors as kids. They spent all of their time together and made a ton of memories. Janie moves to the nicer side of town before high school and they decide to pretend that they are no longer friends. She is on the popular track and Micah is not. Janie feels like she and Micah have one soul but hat she needs to live before they are together. Micah has no idea what Janie thinks. He just helps her (a la Margo Rothman) when she shows up at his house. Do we really understand unhealthy relationships as a teenager? Do we mean to hurt people or are we just trying to figure it out?
There are mental health undertones and alcoholism and really bad decisions. There is amnesia and fire and police involvement.
The books that are good but not more than that are often hard for me to rate. I don't know exactly why I like it some but not better and it's hard to quantify.
The writing is beautiful and the inner monologue of the teenage girl was well done. We never really understand what is going on beneath the surface.
