Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay

Elevated horror was a mistake.

I was going to give this 2 Stars, but the ending is stupidly try-hard. This is pretentious, and that's outside of the intentionally pretentious parts. The author is trying going for a "darkness inside us all" thing with all sorts of 9th grade metaphors. I could have been okay with this, but the characters are shallow and unlikable, and the story never spins its wheels until it craps out at the end. Too much gore and "OooOOoo spooky" moments, not enough genuine emotion. At least it's short. Also, it does my "favorite thing:" telling me (the reader) how to feel. "We" don't do anything book/overwritten screenplay. I'm not with you. I'd recommend literally any other book on my horror-about-film shelf.
