juniperd 's review for:
Sisterland
by Curtis Sittenfeld
for me, this is one hot mess of a book -- there's just too much going on, too much it's trying to be, too many plot threads that cause this to be a longer and sloppier book than it could have been. i know i am going to be in a small minority on this one but that's fine. not every book is for every reader. this was a book i would not have normally chosen as it seems to be under the murky banner of 'chicklit', but i read it for a small work project. i went into it optimistic - it's getting a lot of positive attention as 'THE summer book to read' and i love a great summer read. i went into it hoping for a bit of an eye-opening experience -- experiencing smart, well-written literature for women, versus 'chicklit'. what i experienced with sisterland, unfortunately, felt like being pulled into some icky jodi picoult galaxy where everything is over-wrought and melodramatic. this is my first time reading sittenfeld but i don't feel the need to read her previous books now.
