The Demon Tide by Laurie Forest
3.5

I LOVE Forest’s capacity to build on top of a world that she’s already painted such a vivid picture of, and that in my opinion is the evidence of a strong literary master. Forest doesn’t disappoint in the continued storylines, applying her signature style of Ring Theory. I love Forest’s master weaving throughout the whole series thus far, and the Demon Tide is a clever, imaginative example of Lattice Theory and Euclidean Geometry APPLIED IN LITERATURE. Frankly, from one author to another, to apply these concepts seeming so effortlessly into stories is beyond the scope of many traditional authors, and it’s a clever, original concept that I haven’t seen worked into a series since GRRM, Tolkein, and Lewis.
I’m astounded by these scathing reviews, berating her sensitivity and careful respect to “fantasy” POC. It’s evident that Forest has utilized sensitivity readers, and as a POC I have no issues with the delivery. I applaud Forest’s lateral messages and undercurrents of challenging social norms. I LOVED Forest’s ability to even bring fresh, lavender-hued light to political issues that range from not just racism, but cover wide expanses like female choice, consent, gender identity, polyamorous relationships, and so much more. Does Forest employ these in her works that toes lines (or simply says screw convention)? Hell yes. And THAT is what makes a revolutionary author in literary history. I’m looking forward to Forest’s continued success and contribution to the literary world.
