Russian Fairy Tales by Ivan Bilibin, Gillian Avery

5.0

This is a nice, refreshing collection of tales. While many of the classic motifs do appear (the Cinderella story, the giants and the tricksters) these stories didn't feel so...so European. They provided good introduction into Russian culture and heritage. My favorite story was probably 'Tsarvich Ivan, the Firebird and the Grey Wolf'. The Grey Wolf was a fascinating character such as I hadn't encountered in other books of tales. 'Little Bear Cub' was also extremely entertaining.
