Dick's best novel of the 1950s by a long way indeed. This was penned whilst Dick was in the middle of writing a bunch of truly awful non-genre mainstream novels in a bid for literary respectability - the vast majority of which never saw publication in his lifetime - but whilst those novels are trash, this one is inspired largely because it borrows some of the techniques he was developing in them and applies them to a science fiction scenario.
