The Five Wounds
by Kirstin Valdez Quade
The story focuses on a family’s transformational year where each member’s struggle reaches a tragic breaking point. Amadeo, Angel and Yolanda all face immense personal challenges and try reaching in their own ways for a better life, but are all held back by each other and their own personal flaws. The three of them are so earnest in their determination to be better that I couldn’t help but root for them, even in their unflattering and frustrating moments. I took three months to get through this book, mostly because of the pacing of the story (I also found it difficult to get through the middle third), but I am very glad that I finished it.
This story was very unique and profound, and can’t wait to read more from Quade.
