Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

Wow! I was stunned by this novel! In a good way of course.

Echo Emerson went from being popular girl one day to social pariah the next. She does not recall what gave her the horrific scars on her arms and pulls away from her friends, the popular clique in school. She has to see a therapist, Mrs Collins and at first she rebels against this, refusing any help she offers as she feels it is a waste of time. Mrs Collins purpose is to try and help her regain her memory of the night she got those scars on her own. Enter Noah Hutchins, the sexy bad boy rebel of her high school. Infamous for his one-night stands, Echo would never dream of going anywhere near him yet their paths collide.

Noah sees Mrs Collins too, he used to be an all star basketball player with amazing grades but he also has been in and out of various foster homes. Labelled "unstable" when he punched his foster father for hitting his biological son, he hates the System and is looking for a way to get his brothers back. He knows of Echo, popular girl dating popular guy. He doesn't know her on the inside though. Their being thrown together changes that. At first, Noah thinks it is fun to fool around and tease her but when he finds out about her scars and gets to know her alittle. He is drawn to her.

Echo knows her own share of tragedy, her older brother Aires, was killed on duty when he served the military as a Marine. Devastated and with the event of her scars, Echo withdraws, she does know however that she wants to rebuild the car Aires never got to. Echo also dislikes her father's new wife, Ashley. She was actually her nanny before all this. It is revealed that Echo's mother has bipolar. Echo blamed Ashley for everything bad that happened.

Noah can't stand the foster family his brothers are living with. Due to his bad experiences, he believes firmly that they will hurt Jacob and Tyler. His plan is to get his file from Mrs Collins and find out as much as he can about the parents and to prove they are unfit.

He realizes Echo is the key to get his file. He wants to help her remember too. She finds herself attracted by him but knows his reputation. He proves her wrong though, showing her not to judge a book by it's cover. I like his loyalty to his foster and actual siblings. He would truly do anything for them. She tires after trying to fit back into the life she once had. That was who she was before and she is different now. She takes the risk with Noah, knowing he does not do commitment. How will they come out okay? Two individuals with daunting problems.

I loved this book! Hands down! I really did not know how good it was till I started reading. I loved the pov voices of Echo and Noah. The other characters had an adequate voice too and I liked that there was this mystery aspect to the story and slowly the details were revealed. The anticipation was what kept me glued.

Speaking of anticipation, our odd couple comes in. I never expected Noah to want to be anything other than a bad boy who gets stoned but as he begins to know Echo, he finds he wants to do good by her. The smoking chemistry between them was hot, hot, hot! I also like that this love story went through the toughest hurdles. It dealed with the good and bad. Which is what really makes a good couple. I also loved how even though Noah is such a bad boy that he respects Echo, her choices. You have to adore a guy that does that. Girls! this is one of the traits of a good guy! He stood by her through everything, even when she regained her memories and relived her nightmare. They thought being apart was what was best but it made them feel terrible.

I liked how Echo turned out in the end, she did things for herself and not what anyone wanted. Granted it was not what she expected but she is happy that she can live her life as she wants. Noah learned to give in, he realizes it was okay to not have a perfect family. There is no way to recreate the past but the future is full of new dreams. Both of them really grew.

This novel was nothing short of a winner. Read it for sexy romance, mystery, discovering yourself, being strong and facing your demons. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard there would be a sequel and another book after that. It will be Beth's story than Isaiah's turn. I really thought Beth and Isaiah would be together, so to discover he wasn't the leading man was surprising. Oh well, have to get my hands on the next book to find out who is Beth's other half!
