God of Ruin by Rina Kent

3.0

I have read everything Rina puts out. Literally everything. Sometimes it’s a hit and sometimes it’s a miss. I think she’s a great writer, I enjoy her style, but there’s something to be said about traditional publishing vs self publishing. Traditional publishing would catch some of the errors her readers see , the things that cause annoyance and makes her lose credibility.

If you didn’t know, all of the “Legacy ofGods” books are second generation characters. You can find all the characters of this series’ parents in other series’. I love the concept. I think it’s fantastic we get to keep seeing characters and how their lives turned out in this manner. The only problem is… the kids need to track. In this series some of the kids personalities make sense, and some don’t.

In Landon’s case it kind of tracks. If he were Aiden’s kid it would completely track (if you haven’t read Aiden and Elsa’s books you should), Levi, Landon’s father, wasn’t quite as messed up as Aiden, but he’s not completely sane, either, so I can sort of give his crazy a pass, even if the level of crazy for him isn’t quite there, genetically at least. Mia, on the other hand, disappointed the shit out of me.

I liked Landon’s character. He had redeeming qualities that made him mostly likable. He was full of himself for sure, but he could at least admit that he’s a fucked up guy. Not only is he aware of himself, but you almost feel sorry for him because he’s so aware he understands that he’s not as loved as his siblings because of it, or at least that’s how he feels, and while he chemically can’t feel sorrow over that, he knows he should, he’s supposed to, and it’s a little heartbreaking. He’s made to understand that even if he chemically can’t feel empathy, he can still be empathetic, so he works on himself and I like how the author did this for him.

Mia, on the other hand was a disappointment. Her mom and dad, per their own books, are badass killers for the Russian Mafia. They’re both equally as violent and dangerous, but only one of their children is? Mia’s brother is absolutely off his rocker, but Mia can’t even fight? Her mother would’ve beat the shit out of Landon and left him laying in the street mangled, but Mia can barely even land a punch. Again, it’s just very underwhelming. I was hoping to see Rai 2.0, and we got little mouse most of the time, which Landon actually calls her for a while.

Also, what’s with the ribbons?? It’s never explained. She still wears her hair in pigtails with a shit ton of ribbons. Why? Is it part of a goth look or something? I get Landon was attracted to her attitude and her being petrified of the dark, at first, but she doesn’t seem that attractive ir dangerous even though she describes herself that was over and over throughout the book. If we, the readers, were supposed to see her that way, I wish we would’ve been told why.

I just feel like this book was a copy and paste of her cousin Killian’s book except with maybe a few more redeeming qualities. I do like how Landon doted on her and was able to understand his own feelings towards her, and how he learned ASL for her.

Overall I gave it 3 ⭐️ because I liked it, but I think it would’ve benefitted from an outsider telling the author so of the flaws.
