Machiavelli is not just misunderstood but directly misquoted and generally misconstrued as being evil, psychopathic, without conscience, etc. It's sad, especially for a book with so much benefit to potential readers. It does have one benefit: I can tell within five seconds whether the person talking about The Prince has ever read it. They almost never have.
