Fantastic family saga, detailing the plight of koreans in japan. I knew nothing past the nebulous idea that koreans were discriminated against in japan historically, so this read was informative and eye opening. Heartbreaking, emotional, written with love for the characters and nuance towards the world they live in. A wide swath of time passes without you even noticing it, one of my favorite achievements in any book I read. Not easy to do. Greed, women issues, racism, xenophobia, love and loss, all concepts meditated on at length.
