Ruthless Game
by Christine Feehan
This is the ninth book in the GhostWalker series and focuses again (as with the eighth book) on members of GhostWalker Team Three. In this book, the team is deployed to Mexico to rescue two hostages (relatives of el presidente) from a drug cartel. In the process, the team discovers Rose, one of the women who escaped from Dr. Whitney's breeding program with the help of the GhostWalkers. Kane, one of the team members, has been searching for Rose for months, ever since Dr. Whitney paired them as part of the breeding program. He helped her to escape but then lost touch with her. Rose is eight months pregnant with Kane's child and desperately afraid to trust anyone with the safety of her unborn child....anyone except Kane. Overall, this book is solid. It continues the development of the overall plot arch of the series, with more information on Dr. Whitney and his nefarious experiments. That said, Kane and Rose are both somewhat more flat than characters from previous books, without much character development of either of them beyond their basic characters. They are both strong, likeable members of the team. However, because they were paired (and mated) before the book even starts, the book lacks the "courtship" phase of the relationship. Also, the expressions of both Kane and Rose's feelings for each other is both overly repetitive and overly melodramatic. Finally, Kane's almost slavish devotion to Rose in the wake of the birth of their son and his attraction to her post-birth body borders on a little creepy at times. In my opinion, this is the weakest of the series although I continue to like the overall plot and the cast of characters and will look forward to reading further books in the series.
