Of Blood and Fire by Ryan Cahill

4.0

4.2/5⭐️

Did I spend all weekend reading this book without breaks? Yes.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes, mostly.
Will I be reading the rest of the series? Absolutely!

Why this book is 4.2⭐️ and not a 5⭐️ is simply because I think characterisation could use a lot of work. There are a lot of characters in this book and tbh, I have a hard time differentiating between them. Especially newer side characters. This made the story a bit frustrating to get through, personally.

What I love is the mystery and world building. We don’t know much yet about what’s happening with the empire. And all those mentions of awesome creatures????? AND THE DRAGON????? HES SO CUTE????

There is a lot of death in this first book and I’m SO excited and anxious to see what’s coming next.
I’ve been waiting SO LONG for a traditional fantasy like this since Tolkien! Now, I’m not saying this is anywhere close to Tolkiens masterpieces, but it sure is a very promising start.

There’s so much intrigue that it makes me want to continue. But I didn’t care much for the characters I won’t lie and it almost ruined it for me. However, were it not for the beautifully written prose, great world building and plot, I think I would’ve DNF’d this book based on characters alone.

For a debut novel, this is extremely ambitious and very very impressive.
