The Five Wounds: A Novel by Kirstin Valdez Quade
5.0
This book really hit me in the feels.
This was a beautifully written story following three generations of the Padilla family - Grandmother Yolanda, Father Amadeo, and Angel. Each character has a complex story that affects and is affected by the other family members.
Angel, the pregnant teenager, was my overall favorite character. I liked that her story focused on the anxiety of having a child at a young age, dealing with teenage drama, but also her growth. At first, Amadeo's character was really annoying and confusing but he shows the most change throughout the story. Last, Yolanda's story was heartbreaking and made me miss my own grandparents.
The other great part of this book is that I feel like it didn't focus on trauma that was happening to the characters. It focused more on the characters' coping and just living their lives in tough situations. I also liked that this book had a realistic and satisfying ending for all characters.
This seems like it would be a great book club pick because there's a lot of plot to discuss.
