Ra the Mighty: Cat Detective by Amy Butler Greenfield, Sarah Horne
3.0
Wanted to love it - a cat detective in ancient Egypt? Yes, please! - but was mostly just meh with the whole thing when it came down to actual writing and characterization. Honestly I’m only rating it higher since it is about a cat. I was tempted to rate it lower due to it being yet another young/middle-grade book with an unnecessary allusion to an age gap between the male character and the female character (the romance isn’t explicit but it’s played with for humor/possible foreshadowing). I understand that younger female love interests is definitely a theme among some of the great detective works of fiction, but it’s a point best left in the past and not perpetuated onto a new generation. Referring to the female as so much younger, in this case almost kitten-like, needs to stop.
