17 short, fiery stories. My favourite ones are the historical retellings of mediaeval Japanese folktales because I really learned a lot more about the intricacies of feudal Japan, it's hierarchy and religion. His Meiji and Taisho period stories, though more experimental, in my opinion dragged on and were less interesting.
