Leah on the Offbeat
by Becky Albertalli
I can’t stand Leah. There, I said it. I found her to be very annoying throughout which threw off the entire vibe for me. From beginning to end, I didn’t enjoy anything she had to say. Her attitude was unnecessary and there was really no real reason behind it or growth from it. The “conflicts” for her evoked no passion or interest from me as a reader and were results of her constantly pissy and pessimistic attitude. It seemed like she was supposed to be this headstrong and fearless character but her actions completely contradicted that as she cowered whenever a hard situation presented itself. There was little to no character development - she was a jerk, learned no lessons, but still got her happy ending. It ruined the story for me, which I found to be bland as well.
To be fair, I didn’t see Leah as an outstanding character in “Simon vs...” either so I’m surprised that the second book in the series focused on her. However, I loved “Simon vs...” so much that this book was highly anticipated for me. I was severely let down but I am still looking forward to the next one (as long as Leah isn’t as prevalent a character).
