Wildcard
by Marie Lu
I la la loooooooves Warcross. Probably my favorite book of the year, so I was pretty leery about Wildcard messing up my view of Warcross. I will admit, the book is a bit of a slog. It’s missing the magic of Warcross and we’re left with just the angst of Emika, Hideo and Zero. The tone is darker and bleaker and when it’s over, you’re not left with the rush that Warcross left you with.
HOWEVER, I do believe the book is worth reading and the two taken as a whole tell a fuller, more real and more emotionally-driven story than just Warcross alone. We get Sasuke’s story, as bleak as it is, and we get reconciliation and the growth of Hideo’s character into a fully-realized human.
I’m slightly dissatisfied at the end of the book (will there be a third) but I still flew through it and found it engaging, if a bit slow.
