If you're unfamiliar with Kristin Hannah, the author's niche is writing historical fiction from women's perspectives.
This book is split between the perspective of two protagonists.
One of the protagonists is heroic and the other is not. Neither of the characters are interesting, and they were seemingly written just to juxtapose each other. In fact, most of the characters in this book are static, shallow, and uninteresting.
I don't think I've ever read a book where a main character didn't do anything and made one actual decision throughout the entire novel. I think the author could have ripped out 50% of the book and it might have been a lot better.
The author's writing style did not draw me into the story. There are many moments where the suspension of disbelief is broken. There are many moments where a character will make a decision to do something and have the clairvoyance to know how to navigate it perfectly. Characters also seem to teleport between different locations faster than they should in wartime with seeming ease. I will not be reading another book by this author again.
