All Through the Night by Mary Higgins Clark

3.0

A engrossing novel of suspense involving a scared teen mother, an abandoned baby, a robbery, and a forged will.

When the book begins, Sondra, an eighteen year old woman leaves her baby girl on the doorstep of a church rectory inside a paper bag along with a stroller. Unbeknownst to her, Lenny, a robber is hiding in the church to steal a revered chalice from the church. Lenny successfully steals the chalice and then grabs the stroller and paper bag to throw off suspicion. Lenny is completely surprised when he arrives home to his aunt’s apartment and discovers the baby girl inside the paper bag. Lenny quickly comes up with a story of the baby’s origin which allow him to remain living with his aunt as well as give the baby (which he names Star or Stellina) a family.

Meanwhile at the local church, the local kids space is in danger of being shut down due to the age of the building. One of the church’s members Bessie has recently passed away and left her sister Kate the building so it can be repurposed as the kids center. Everything is going well until the two existing tenants the Bakers claim that Bessie left the building to them in her will. Kate is distraught over the situation and this is about the time when Alvirah decides to lean her detective skills to get to the bottom of the forged will.

Although I don’t regularly read books by this author, this was a surprisingly quick read. Higgins Clark creates characters that the reader cares about and a develops a storyline that makes you feel invested in the story and makes you want to stick with it until the book ends.
