The City We Became
by N.K. Jemisin
Amazing. I enjoyed this much more than the Broken Earth trilogy (which was also good), perhaps because this novel was set in contemporary NYC. It touches on themes of police brutality, gentrification, racism, sexual assault, and contagion, all while being mostly funny and bighearted. The audiobook was outstanding; the narrator had great accents (to my non-NY ears) for each of the boroughs.
