The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells

5.0

After so many cheerful holiday reads, I needed a reset with some angst, so re-read one of my favorites by the queen, Cate C. Wells. Now, I don't like angst just for the sake of itself. For me, the payoff for the turnoil needs to be equal to or greater than the suffering itself. Nobody understands this like Wells.

Una is seemingly a late bloomer. At 27, she's never shifted. When she does though, and immediately realizes that Alpha Killian is her mate, he rejects her publicly. Suffering physical and emotional injuries, Una flees and begs the local "crone" to remove their bond.

The journey these two take coming back together is so emotional and fulfilling. The chapter where Killian's wolf becomes a golden retriever for Una lives rent free in my head. I think I've remembered it every day since I first read this book 18 months ago. When the dumb dumb gets his head out of his ass, he falls fast and hard for Una. The scary, unbeatable alpha is a puppy for his mate. Their history is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

I don't know how Wells does it, but good lord it's good.
