Following the same structure as previous books in the Saxon Chronicles series, this one works harder to bring the fear of battles to life. Cornwell's fantastic scene setting makes you believe that you're really feeling and smelling everything around you. Uhtred's character development really comes through in this book as you get a glimpse of his age and his fears. You learn how childhood traumas and battle experiences have shaped him into the legendry Uhtred, but nonetheless, he is still human. Is this the first time Uhtred realises Alfreds mission of uniting the kingdoms to become England is achievable? Or is it just the first time he let's the reader into that thought process. Now, onto the last in the series!
