Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

2.5

This book had an amazing premise, but didn't deliver in a way that I found compelling. I saw a review that said something along the lines of "this book needed a science editor so badly" and I can't help but agree. After the third marine biologist says "those (captive born) cetaceans should be released into the wild!" it became clear to me that the author 1. Didn't know as much about marine science as someone writing a mermaid sci-fi book should and 2. Was going to spend the entire book proving to me that they DID know science with ridiculous philosophizing and dense prose. After a certain point I was just reading for the sake of finishing.

Side note: captive bred animals don't have the immune system to survive wild ecosystems! Releasing those orcas and dolphins into the wild instead of a sanctuary would actually be incredibly inhumane. Tf.
