Breathless

This book reminds me of summers when I was a young teenager visiting the outer banks in North Carolina with my family. For me, each summer carried the promise of a new boy crush that always ended in disappointment (as do many teen crushes, but try telling that to my 13 year old self). Despite this book taking place in a different location than my beloved Outer Banks, it truly felt like I was there.
Breathless follows 18 year old Claude, a soon-to-be-graduating senior who just found out that her parents are separating. After graduation, she and her mom go and stay on a remote island off the coast of Georgia for a few weeks while her mom does research for her newest book. Claude’s world is understandably turned upside down, and she uses this getaway to reinvent, and ultimately grow into, herself. Along the way, there’s friendship, anger, adventures, and love.
Niven explores life transitions, divorce, first loves, trust, friendship, and family in this beautifully written young adult novel. Claude is very much so a typical teenager- confused (who wasn’t?), emotionally labile (again, name one teen who isn’t), and dramatic (you all remember). Being a teenager also means so many beautiful things, though- she’s hopeful, growing emotionally, open, honest, and hasn’t yet been beaten down by the joys of adulthood (hello rent money and 9-5 job). Niven captures the adolescent brain and spills it out into her books (I was going for artsy with that sentence and ended up with creepy/scary- this is why we leave writing to the professionals). Perfect when paired with two kinds of gummy candies (both sour and sweet), and pretzels that you shovel into your mouth at an alarming speed. 4⭐️
