The Phoenix on the Sword by Robert E. Howard

3.0

3.5 ⭐ | A few days ago I found a short story called Gods of the North and my scandinavian heart wanted to read it immediately. I found out that this short story is part of a series called Conan the Barbarian and this is the first one. As far as I know there is sort of a whole Conan-Universe?
The story basically includes an entire high fantasy novel without all the extravagant/epic descriptions, because it just comes straight to the point.
In the first two chapters we get to know the good and bad side so that we have a good overview of the situation. The two following chapters include a little twist that overcomes all the plans and creates additional tension. Chapter five, the great finale is about the "huge" battle with an interesting ending that will definitely make you curious about Conans world and its other adventures.

Personally, I found it a bit difficult to get into the story because I did not know what to expect and who Conan is. Maybe The Phoenix on the Sword is not the best one to start with. However, if you are in the mood for a classic fantasy novel but do not want to read 600 pages, this is absolutly worth it.

"You need not be so nervous", said Thoth. "The plot can not fail."
"Ascalante can make mistakes as well as another," snapped Dion, sweating at the mere thought of failure.
"Not he," grinned the Stygian savagely, "else I had not been his slave, but his master."
