I had no idea how long and how terribly the Irish, both Protestant and Catholic, were oppressed by British rule and policies. It's horrible to think that the lovely Irish linen was created in sweatshop conditions, and that the horrors of the Industrial revolution were inflicted on people who were deliberately kept in penury by denial of opportunities and blatant discrimination.
Others may say that it's a very black and white view, but you can see that the Protestant/ Catholic conflict was largely manufactured by the British to create internal friction and avoid a united Irish rebellion.
A very long book and sometimes hard to follow, but well worth reading.
