Teen Titans, Volume 1: Damian Knows Best by Benjamin Percy

3.0

A grittier version of the Teen Titans, which is only natural given that the Damian version of Robin is in charge. Damian is the son of Batman and Talia al’ghul, and grandson of R’as al’ghul, and he was raised to be an assassin in the evil League of Shadows. So the kid has issues, but also deadly skills.

Like all of the recent DC reboots, I have no idea what is canon and what isn’t. I don’t know the backstory of this version of Batman, how long he’s been Batmanning, all that stuff. Apparently the Titans previously existed, led by Tim Drake who is now dead, but these kids weren’t in the Titans, although maybe a couple were? There’s also a weird giant red Wookiee-with-wings that Damian hangs around with. No idea what that’s about. Also, the League of Assassins’ Evil Island of Evil is apparently close enough to San Francisco that the flying fanged horror can get there in a half-hour, and Beast Boy can follow as a little green fly, which is weird. I thought R’as was from the Middle East. They’ve moved everything around again.

It’s stupidly confusing. Stop rebooting everything, DC. This is one of the reasons why people are annoyed by your books.

Anyway, the story is basically a combination of “you need friends to get by” and “don’t bite your friends”, which is solid. The emotional climax is more important than the resolution of the physical confrontation, and it’s a solid story.

The art by two or three different artists is fairly consistent and mostly well done.
