The Shadow of the Torturer

I wasn't thrilled to read a book about a Torturer much less a guild of the bloody bastards. Fortunately for me, Mr. Wolfe had grander things in mind.
The first thing that sticks out is word choice. Somebody needs to take this man's Dictionary of Archaic Words away from him. If there's isn't such a book, you could pluck plenty of words from this book to start one. Autarch, Caique, Lansquenet, Paduasoy, the list goes on. I had to Google quite a few words.
The second thing that I liked was the characters. Severian, Dr. Talos, Doras, are all really engaging characters and all for different reasons. The world surrounding the characters is full of mystery that Mr. Wolfe is slowly unveiling. The twist revealed at the end of the duel was a good one. It was one of those that was so obvious that I kicked myself for not recognizing it.
I'll most certainly be moving on to the next book.
