Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick

3.0

3.5 stars. Not for the faint of heart. It's truly horrifying what the North Koreans suffer and I fear it will only be worse in the months to come as they have closed their borders to all aid and even Chinese help due to COVID. Also recent typhoons have destroyed the harvest . . .

One drawback to this book was its repetitiveness; I also would have liked to hear more about the defectors' decisions to escape. For some of them it seemed like it only took a paragraph and they were gone.

Overall, though, I feel like this is an important book, one that highlights in a compassionate but not sensational manner lives that most of us cannot imagine.
