A Danger to Herself and Others
by Alyssa Sheinmel
I meant to post this far sooner, as I read it sometime in the autumn-ish of last year, but PHEW, it was a let-out, one far more epic than I expected from a book I didn’t have any particular expectations for.
To put it very bluntly, this REEKS of ableism. This is very, very, VERY obliviously written by someone neurotypical, one has never been in a real psych ward, and who could not be bothered to do proper research or care in her portray of them or of mental illness as a whole. Hannah isn’t particularly likeable, though she is meant to be somewhat sympathetic, but she goes through no real character developement, and the ‘big twist’ was overdone, over-dramatized, and really drove home the overall misrepresentation and stigmatization of mental illnesses. The only part this author got right was the portrayal of the psychologist.
TL; DR: This was not a good book, 2/5 stars.
