Shanghai Immortal
by A.Y. Chao
As much as I wanted to like this book, it just wasn’t for me. I think the main culprit was the writing style and Jings character - we had direct address to the reader with terms like “yeah, sob, sob, I know”, and generally Jings thoughts and words with “I am floppy, I am the way, I flow like the Whanhpoo. No, like diarrhoea!”
Immortal Shanghai also reads like a YA, I literally can’t imagine why it’s marketed as for adults when Jing makes me feel like I’m reading about a kid due to her sense of humour and personality.
