Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools by Jonathan Kozol

4.0

Definitely eye opening and potentailly life-changing this book highlights the disparity between educational funding (and therefore quality) between rich and poor areas. I actually cried a few times.

On an editorial note I could have done with considerably less quoting from newspapers. I often felt that I could have gotten the same story if I read the NYTimes education section...which I often do in fact. Also it was disheartening not to be presented with any solution beyond increasing funding for pooorer school districts. Can the average reader do anything? Do I have to be a lobbyist, lawyer or extremely dedicated but poorly paid teacher to change the system?

I wonder what the situation is now in these schools, in the post-Leave No Child Behind era.
