These days, I've been thinking a lot about Nancy Pearl's four reading doorways: plot, story, setting, and language. Plot and story are both extremely important to me. This book has gotten a lot of critical acclaim, so much so that I felt a little let down while reading it. It's a setting and language book. So it's not the book, as much as a mismatch between book and reader. The language is lovely, and the setting is rich in detail. I just felt too distant from Peretur's motivations--why does she want to join the Companions so badly? There's not much tension, or a driving story that made me unable to put this down. But still, I can see why others liked it more. The atmosphere is good, and reminded me of watching The Green Knight movie, which isn't a bad thing at all.
