Wearing Paper Dresses by Anne Brinsden
4.0

Anne Brinsden has crafted a stunning debut novel in "Wearing Paper Dresses". This is the story of a family, and a town, and a place called the Mallee and how they all cope with one woman's glittering disappearance into herself.
Marjorie knows her mother isn't like other mothers and watching her unfold under the weight of the Mallee's harsh conditions shapes her as surely as the land itself. Then a tragic event has her running for the softness of the city. It will take the boy she loves to call her home to the harsh land and her family.

I loved how Anne Brinsden ensured that the land of the Mallee was as strong a character as any of the people in this book. She captured beautifully the way the land speaks loudly and tests those who dare to scratch out a living in some of the harshest places on earth. And in Marjorie she crafted a character so human, so struggling and hopeful that you almost expect her to leap off the page. Pick up "Wearing Paper Dresses" and spend some time in the Mallee. You won't regret a moment.
