saltandcedar 's review for:
Caraval
by Stephanie Garber
What I liked:
A lot of reviews for this book complain about the characters. Despite the plot twists and confusion, I really felt invested in the relationships between characters. Most characters were not as fleshed out as they could have been or should have been, I will admit that, but those that were definitely managed to get my attention.
I liked the world of Caraval. The little bits of magic in everything, and how I never quite knew what to expect. The book kept me on my toes trying to guess what would happen next and kept surprising me.
What I didn't like:
As much as I liked it when the book surprised me, I did feel like there were too many plot twists. It eventually gets tiring to be turned on your head too many times in a row.
I felt the pacing was off at the end of the novel. Everything happened far more quickly in the last few chapters, and it felt really off compared to everything else. Endings mean a lot for how much I like a book, and despite my complaint about the plot twists if Garber had managed to nail the ending here I might have given this book 5* just on the strength of how entertained I was. But the ending was a letdown and for that reason, I just can't.
Overall:
I got what I was hoping for from this book. It was an entertaining read that kept me turning the pages. I will read the sequel.
