Antony and Cleopatra by William Shakespeare
3.5
not my favorite tragedy by any means, but a very complex and interesting one. it felt a bit more modern in the sense that it's a story of people being selfish and self-serving and awful in ways, but it's also not that at all - it's more of a story about how love makes us act and may change us in ways that leave us floundering (because love makes antony "not quite roman" as he once was). it was interesting to see the way that "roman-ness" was presented in this and i'd love to reread it through the lens of toxic attitudes of masculinity because SO MUCH of that was present in the way the romans, particularly caesar, viewed being roman in relation to antony.
