Rachel is a young woman working as a nanny in France when she is notofied her mother in England is dying of influenza. She rushes back to England but is too late, her mother has died. Rachel has memories of her father who supposedly died when she was 4 but as she is cleaning out her mother's small rented cottage she finds evidence that perhaps he isn't deceased. The story follows Rachel as she becomes Vera, one of the Smart Young Things who party til they drop night after night so that she might become acquainted with her sister and, in turn, her father. But things don't always go as you plan and often there's more to the story. I didn't see the surprising twist at the end.
