The Winter Sister
by Megan Collins
The Winter Sister is Megan Collins' stunning debut, which tells the story of Sylvie, whose sister, Persephone, was murdered when she was 14. After sixteen years, her murderer has yet to be arrested and Persephone's case was eventually closed. Sylvie returns home quite reluctantly to care for her mother, Annie, who has cancer and is undergoing treatment. Sylvie is distraught when she finds out Ben, who was Persephone's boyfriend and who she believed was her sister's killer, works as a nurse in the cancer treatment center where her mother is being treated. Sylvie also has her own guilt about that night, the feeling that she led to her own sister's death.
This book explores the complicated relationship between Sylvie and her mother and reveals secrets that had been long buried. Will Persephone's murderer ever be found?
The Winter Sister is unputdownable and gripping. I could not tear myself away from reading its suspenseful pages and read it past midnight. Megan Collins has captured the emotional rawness of being in a somewhat dysfunctional family in a genre I least expect it to be in: mystery/thriller. It is a stunning debut, one that left me emotional and in tears at 1am. I highly recommend The Winter Sister, and I will be looking forward to Megan Collins' next book.
