Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov

"Are you really too lazy to live?" asked Stolz.
"I guess I am, truly, Andrei."

As I started this book, I wondered if I could finish it as the narrative follows, for the most part, Oblomov and his non-eventful life. The first 15-20% was of a morning in his room as visitors came and left until a particular friend visited and I began to hope that something will happen. Unfortunately, everything sort of fell flat. The point is do NOT expect anything exciting of Oblomov. There were so many frustrating moments and yet, I also understood his need for a non-life (sometimes anyway). Aside from Oblomov’s preference for a very sedentary living, he is actually living a daydream –holding on to the easy childhood past and not worrying of current/future issues which accordingly highlights the Russian feudal concern who refused to move on to the future but hanging on to how things were in the past. Oblomov is an utterly frustrating character but the book itself has woven an interesting picture of Russia for me.
