Happy Place by Emily Henry
3.0

It started out slow, but then the pace picked up.

Definitely loved the whole 98% of the plot, especially down to the airport when the three of them said their goodbyes.

Definitely did not love the remaining 2%. Come on. It just wasn’t believable. Choosing to slave for 10 years over something you suddenly realize you “hate,” after saying that all their life, ever since she was a child, she wanted to be a doctor, and then completely turning 180 and saying, bam! I want to be a potter instead!

Is. So. Freaking. Uuuugh.

If Book Lovers was about the other woman who didn’t have the happy ending in a Hallmark movie, then this is the one about a couple who were made for a Hallmark movie.

My brain. Hurts.

Ok!!! I definitely loved the whole friendship angle. I’m a sucker for sisterhood plots. I also liked Wyn and Harriet.

But I loved it the most when the plot turns to talk about depression and mental health. That was amazing. It was a good foreshadowing (or I just didn’t bother to analyze it— I mean, it’s a goddamn romance book fgs) for Wyn’s character.

Also, the whole Real Life/Happy Place back and forth was confusing. I know it was a present to past storyline but it was still… eh. (Would have added plus points if there were dates added to the chapter titles though). I ended up skimming the Happy Place Wyn and Harry parts because it didn’t seem necessary or relevant to the present plot at all.

The banters between Wyn and Harry were also????

I mean, Harry is supposed to be this shy, awkward, gawky girl but now she can just throw flirtatious, witty banters at this guy she knew just seconds ago? I’d understand the after years when they finally got close to each other, but ?? Come on.

THE FREAKING MONOLOGUES.

Who drops fucking speeches like that??

Absolutely no one.

And y’all might hate on Sabrina, and damn right I agree she wasn’t right about stepping over boundaries, but I LOVE HER. She cared and loved them. It might have been asshole-ish of her to manipulate all of them but damn y’all got to chill!!! No one tells her anything, how is girlie supposed to know???

Anyway. After reading such a good masterpiece as Book Lovers, this was… a letdown, lol. Definitely a good wash from having an Emily Henry hangover. I’m clean now.

I barely rate anything 3 stars :((( it’s so reserved for books that I just. ???? Like?? This book would have been at least 4 stars if not for (1) the way it was written, (2) the ending, and (3) damn dial down the monologues sheesh

It’s a book that I’m not that big on seeing in the big screen when it finally happens, but might pick it up when? Idk. Probably when I’m finally going through a breakup or smth. This book had hit the right sore places.

The ending had really disappointed me so much. I feel like there could have been a better alternative to the MC choosing pottery all of a sudden lol. Like damn gurl you could actually just spend your residency in Montana ?? There are hospitals there, too??? Or just wait it out til she becomes an actual doctor and then there’s the “oh we meet again, here’s to second chance” kind of trope, especially given that Wyn and Harry were obvious at not letting their relationship go in the first place. Damn that miscommunication plot-hole was a major eyeroll.
