I regret picking this up, it was such a chore to finish. It is the literal definition of a book that has aged poorly, and not just because of the extremely outdated language. Based on the premise, I expected some insights into human society that might still be relevant today, but unfortunately the book never achieves escape velocity from the author's very specific time, place and psyche. All we get is a lot of ponderous dialogue about a very American strain of organized religion, a brief tour of the seediest scenery of mid 20th century America (circus carnies, Vegas strip shows) and a look at the sexual fantasies of a fairly unimaginative 1960's chauvinist. Unless that happens to be what you're looking for, steer well clear.
Graphic: Sexism
Moderate: Racism
