A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
4.0

I was wary when I began the book, worrying that the whole story would turn into a depressing tale of starvation and poverty. I also wondered if it would be as preachy as Little Women (which I still love, but the preachiness does get a bit annoying). It was not either of these things. Francie is an engaging child, and I loved the beginning of the book. The middle, with her murky adolescense, becomes difficult for me to love. It wasn't too Are You There God...which I hated, but somehow it felt like Francie was too distant. When she falls in love for the first time, I loved it again, and completed it with slightly mixed feelings. I would read something else by Betty Smith, and I would read this again. I don't re-read many books now that I belong to a good library.
