My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

4.0

This is exactly the type of novel I love to read: one that is loosely plotted, organically following a character’s life, feeding me details about the character slowly.

My Brilliant Friend will give you more than a story about paradoxical love of a best friend and their coming of age. It will captivate you with the lives of working class Naples, wrought with violence and struggles.

Content warning: there truly is an amazing amount of violence—domestic and otherwise—throughout this novel. It is often not described in detail, rather it is mentioned in passing because of how ritual it is.
