Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

5.0

I find YA to be difficult to enjoy. There's a tone to the characters and situations that I find... inaccessible? Immature isn't the right word. But it operates on a wavelength that I can't match most of the time.

Legendborn is a happy surprise. I was skeptical but it slowly but surely won me over. Great book. It has all the tropes but does them well, and the inclusion of connections to racism IRL is not ham-fisted or used as the basis of the plot. (Important stories to tell, but I like reading Black stories that are more than real-life generational trauma. In hindsight, saying this is funny given the author's motivations for the MC, but I hope I get my meaning across.)

The twist was also quite enjoyable. Didn't see that one coming; I had a completely different twist in mind.

Looking forward to the next one.
