Capture the Crown by Jennifer Estep
5.0

Feels like all I’ve been reading lately are spin-offs and for someone who really wasn’t a fan of them, I have to say that I’ve found some good stories that I don’t mind that they’re spin-offs. This is the case with Capture the Crown. It’s a spin off from the Crown of Shards series.
Things from the original series are mentioned/commented on and I didn’t feel like it hindered my reading experience. I’ve read some books where they refer to things from other books and if you haven’t read said book, things feel off.

Gemma is a real cool chick BUT I do have to say that some of her actions, stubborn grudges, and points of view make me question that assessment. An example is this past grudge with Leonidas, it’s totally wrong and warped because of the notoriety his family has. And even when she’s able to “go back” and see that event, she SEES how wrong she is but she’s not willing to admit she’s wrong. The other thing that kind of sort of bugged me about her is that she’s a “spy” of sorts and she sucks at being a spy!!! Lol especially with her powers, I would’ve thought that would really really make her this kickass spy but alas it doesn’t go down that way.

There’s no way to read the book and not feel for Leo. Dude has had it rough. Sure, he’s not the only one with a rough childhood but what gets me is that he doesn’t let that turn him into the monsters that are part of his family. On the contrary it gives him more purpose to fight it. Even with Gemma’s messed up grudge and therefore descriptions of him, I still feel for him.

Through all the ups and downs, I’m totally into this story. I’m going to go back and read the original trilogy while I wait for book 2!
