New York City is a place, a time, and a person. I finished the book in a day, running errands across Brooklyn and reading in parks and on trains from spot to spot. And in that, I saw much of myself in August - I don't live in NYC itself, but I feel very much like a transplant adopted by the idea of New York, the shops and the cafes, the particular New-York-ism of the COVID response, the friends and memories I make here. And that's what this is about - August learning to open up, and make connections, and let New York adopts her as much as she adopted it. Her relationship with Jane in particular, the parallels and learning to connect with herself... I keep thinking about this book in half-formed sentences, because the end is always just a breathless sigh and then a sniffle. Bittersweet and intimate.
