A Damsel in Distress by P.G. Wodehouse

4.0

I'm probably over-rating this book, but I just had such a good time listening to it that I'm going to give it that little boost it needs to be a 4 star read. This book is almost too charming, with many if not all of the characters lacking everything but charm, and yet the irreverent ways in which they speak to each other and reason effectively puts a smile on your face, so you can't really fault them their faults--of which there are many.

From characters falling in love at first sight, to surreptitious rendezvous, and broken engagements, this book is a screwball comedy of the first degree. You can tell that the author just wanted to make people smile in a time where smiles were scarce.

I think it's a shame that stories like these aren't written anymore with the earnestness that P.G. Wodehouse tackled this. These characters, though zany and over-the-top, aren't caricatures of themselves or of anyone. Sure, an argument can be made that they now appear to be caricatures of the time, but that can happen upon any character created in an archaic landscape.

I liked this story, simple and fantastic as it was, and do believe that this story was born for the silver screen. With the antics that ensue it is sure to delight everyone from 10 to 100 years old. So what the hell--4/5 stars.
